Coulthard: Mateschitz’s ’20-Year Vision’ Earned the Team Respect

David Coulthard highlighted the significance of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz as the team marks 20 years in racing in 2024. The Scottish driver, who was part of the squad during its early days in the pinnacle of motorsport, reflected on how the team has evolved into one of the most successful in Formula 1 history.

Coulthard started his career at Williams in 1993, initially as a test driver before stepping in for the late Ayrton Senna in 1994. In 1996, he switched to McLaren, where he raced until 2004 before joining Red Bull Racing.

He became the first driver for the Austrian team after Mateschitz acquired the struggling Jaguar F1 team, launching the F1 project that has since achieved six constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ championships.

Upon joining Red Bull, Coulthard reflected to PlanetF1 that he didn’t envision a long-term plan: “I never had the idea of a 20-year trajectory for Red Bull. My focus was more on the immediate years—what could I achieve? What could we accomplish in the near future?”

Regarding Mateschitz’s vision for F1, Coulthard added, “I wasn’t sure if Dietrich Mateschitz had that long-term outlook. Before I signed the contract, I needed to know not just if he had the funding—because that’s only part of the equation—but if they also had the expertise. His vision was clear: first, gain the respect of the paddock, and then aim for Formula 1 World Champions.”

Fast forward 20 years, and Red Bull Racing has transformed into a powerhouse that many, including Coulthard himself, might not have predicted when they first joined the team. He concluded, “That vision and belief laid the groundwork for this 20-year celebration. My primary concern was understanding the people involved, assessing what I was used to, identifying gaps, and figuring out how to bridge them. It was a straightforward approach to assembling the right pieces. Honestly, I think that mindset hasn’t changed at all.”
