# Trips to the U.S. Military Cemetery at Lutsk
*This post describes my trips to visit my uncle's grave at Lutsk.*
My uncle [Robert S Winkler](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_S._Winkler)
served as a Lieutenant Colonel in World War II.
After graduating from [The Citadel](https://www.thecitadel.edu/)
he served as an instructor there before being commissioned into
the U.S Army Air Corps.
He was assigned as Operations Officer for his squadron.
In 1944 he was shot down over Germany while flying his P-47 Thunderbolt
and taken prisoner by the German Army.
He died at age 26 at Stalag Luft IV prison camp near Gross Tychow,
Poland.
After his death his body was returned to his family.
In October 1947 his remains were re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
His wife had remarried by then so they moved his remains back to South Carolina.
After his parents died his wife had his remains removed from South Carolina
and re-interred at Arlington National Cemetery again.
In September 1998 he was moved again - this time back overseas
to Lutsk International Cemetery near Lutsk,
[Volyn Oblast](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volyn_Oblast) Ukraine.
I took two trips there over Labor Day weekend in 2016
and Labor Day weekend in 2017.
## First Trip
On September 1st I flew from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)
to Boryspil International Airport (KBP) via Delta Airlines flight DL1377
with connections via Atlanta (ATL) International Airport.
On arrival I met my brother David who had flown from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
We took a taxi from KBP airport directly across town to Lutsk International Airport (LWO).
We arrived there around noon local time (8am EDT).
At LWO we met our driver Viktor who would take us around for our week-long trip.
We first went by car about ten miles south-west along Highway M05
to [Zhytomyr](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhytomyr),
the administrative center of [Zhytomyr Oblast](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhytomyr_Oblast)
Ukraine where we stopped for lunch.

After lunch we returned north-east along M05 back towards Lutsk,
passing by [Hoshcha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoshcha) en route.

We continued along M05 past Hoshcha until it became Highway M06 about halfway between Hoshcha
and Lutsk.
M06 goes directly east-west through Lutsk whereas M05 curves around it's north side.
As we approached Lutsk we stopped briefly at St Catherine Church near St Catherine Cathedral which was built by [Catherine II](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_the_Great)
in 1784 using materials from another church destroyed by Swedes during [The Great Northern War](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Northern_War).

We continued east along M06 until we reached Lutsk International Cemetery,
where we spent about two hours visiting my uncle's grave site.
The cemetery covers about ten acres (4 ha) with about 800 interments.
There were only about twenty visitors present when we arrived but by our departure time shortly after 5pm local time (11am EDT)
there were many more people there - especially Russians since they were observing Victory Day over Germany which falls on May 9th in Russia
but September 1st elsewhere including Ukraine because Russia doesn't observe daylight savings time so they were celebrating early!
After visiting my uncle's grave site we stopped by a nearby café for dinner before returning west along M06 back towards LWO where we arrived around midnight local time (4pm EDT).

## Second Trip

At LWO we met our driver Viktor who would take us around for our week-long trip.
Our first stop was again Zhytomyr where we stopped for lunch en route.
After lunch we returned north-east along M05 back towards Lutsk,
passing by [Hoshcha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoshcha) en route.
